Emotional Night as Lee Reminisces

The room was full at our January Lee-Jackson-Breckinridge Dinner, and the anticipation for the evening was high - the terrible thunderstorms could not dampen the spirits of those who came. After we had placed our dinner orders and settled into conversations, our guest speaker quietly arrived. Though not "in character" yet, upon seeing the image of Lee arrive all conversations stopped and everyone rose quietly in respect. It was a small precursor for the evening.

David Chaltas has tirelessly presented Robert E. Lee, servant of Christ, family and the South, for a number of years. No one is able to present Marse Robert with more humility and respect. It is always a special occasion when this living history is performed because it remains so special to David. This evening had an even more poignant significance, though, as David's closest and dearest supporter had recently passed, and it was only the day before that David had laid his brother to rest. David told us that he was doing what his brother would have wanted; to bring Lee to his compatriots.

Few words can portray what happens when a room filled with expectancy witnesses the closest we will know on this mortal coil of the great general. Bringing truth to the phrase "living" history, we saw the passion, devotion and humor of Lee in person, untethered, untainted.

We were regaled with stories of Lee's decision to defend his country, Virginia, his indominatable sweetheart, his dear children, his military successes and struggles. After the magical presentation ended, folks lingered long to converse with each other and visit with the general. It was truly an evening of remembrance and fellowship.

In addition to his other talents, David is a prolific author. To find out more, visit http://stores.lulu.com/davidchaltas
